Six myths and reality

In the past, window frames have not been properly accepted by consumers.

This can be attributed to many factors, two of which – and even the most important ones – are the incomplete knowledge of the possibilities of wood as a material and the incorrect information about the new methods of construction of the frames with modern equipment ensuring their good quality .

The revolutionary technological production methods applied by the window industries give a new impetus to the wooden frame and restore the truth about this material.

In trying to restore the truth, the myths and inaccuracies that have been said over and over with the simultaneous formulation of the truth about modern wooden frames have been gathered.

1st myth

Wood frames are more expensive than other window frames and will require future maintenance, resulting in even higher costs.

Reality

The concept of “expensive” or “cheap” should be associated not only with the initial purchase cost but with the full cost of using the product. So, if you look at the economy in energy that a wooden frame provides, then of course its cost is reduced and becomes much smaller than other competing products that are anyway devoid of aesthetic value.

With regard to their maintenance, modern production methods have reduced the need for maintenance to a minimum.

Certainly, after the maintenance, the frames are returned to the condition they were purchased in contrast to non-maintenance competing materials in which irreversible alteration of their color or molecular structure occurs.

2nd myth

In order to have wooden frames, trees must be cut, which has a major impact on climate change due to deforestation.

Reality

For both wooden frames and wooden products currently manufactured, certified wood from forests with sustainable management is used.

This means that these forests are managed in such a way that the woody capital not only stays stable but grows.

For this reason, the life cycle study of each material used to manufacture window frames shows that wood is the only material that not only does not burden the environment but also exhibits a negative carbon dioxide emission index during its production.

3rd myth

The wooden frames rot.

Reality

Wooden frames have good guarantees. A manufacturer of wooden frames provides a guarantee which usually lasts up to 10 years.

An average estimate of the minimum lifetime for wooden frames reaches 35 years. However, because wooden frames can prolong their lifetime with a simple maintenance and re-painting they can last a lifetime.

This is evident from the perfectly preserved wooden frames that exist in historic residences or monasteries both in Greece and abroad and are dated over a century.

A report from WWF’s International Environment Protection Agency states that the expected life of a 1.5 m2 wooden window is 60 years, whereas the life of a similar window of PVC is only 20 years.

4th myth

Wooden frames burn, as wood is a “flammable” material.

Reality

Wood is not easy to ignite and this can only happen when temperatures reach 370 ° – 500 ° C.

The wooden parts are burnt hard and their strength decreases gradually compared to metals which are bent by the effects of large temperatures normally developed in a fire.

At the same time due to the low thermal conductivity and the high specific heat of the wood, only one surface layer is charred, which acts as thermal insulation and delays the burning progress.

Under certain conditions, of course, wood products ignite as well as all other materials from the metals up to the reinforced concrete.

5th myth

Wooden frames are subject to chemical treatments that damage both man and the environment.

Reality

Nowadays, the modern window frames industry is processing and painting systems that use water as solvent rather than organic solvents.

These products are harmless for both humans and the environment.

So the wooden frame remains the healthiest option for the human being but also the most environmentally friendly.

6th myth

Wooden frames do not have good insulation.

Reality

Modern wooden frames are produced using the most modern technological methods that guarantee them excellent quality.

Thanks to their high technology of production and modern materials they can offer complete waterproofing, thermal and sound insulation.

These properties of wooden frames are confirmed and certified by laboratory tests. These elements can be checked by the consumer himself, by asking the manufacturer to make the right choice.
